TheAD8336isalownoise,single-ended,linear-in-dB,general-purposevariablegainamplifier,usableoveralargerangeofsupplyvoltages.Itfeaturesanuncommittedpreamplifier(preamp)withausablegainrangeof6dBto26dBestablishedbyexternalresistorsinthe classicalmanner.TheVGAgainrangeis0dBto60dB,anditsabsolutegainlimitsare−26dBto+34dB.Whenthepreamplifiergainisadjustedfor12dB,thecombined3dBbandwidthofthepreampandVGAis100MHz,andtheamplifierisfullyusableto80MHz.With±5Vsupplies,themaximumoutputswingis7Vp-p.
ThankstoitsX-Amp®architecture,excellentbandwidthuniformityismaintainedacrosstheentiregainrangeoftheVGA.Intendedforabroadspectrumofapplications,thedifferentialgaincontrolinterfaceprovidespreciselinear-in-dBgainscalingof50dB/Voverthetemperaturespanof−55°Cto+125°C.Thedifferentialgaincontroliseasytointerfacewithavarietyofexternalcircuitswithinthecommon-modevoltagelimitsoftheAD8336.
ThelargesupplyvoltagerangemakestheAD8336particularlysuitedforindustrialmedicalapplicationsandforvideocircuits.Dual-supplyoperationenablesbipolarinputsignals,suchasthosegeneratedbyphotodiodesorphotomultipliertubes.
Thefullyindependentvoltagefeedbackpreampallowsbothinvertingandnoninvertinggaintopologies,makingitafullybipolarVGA.TheAD8336canbeusedwithinthespecifiedgainrangeof−14dBto+60dBbyselectingapreampgainbetween6dBand26dBandchoosingappropriatefeedbackresistors.Forthenominalpreampgainof4×,theoverallgainrangeis−14dBto+46dB.
Incriticalapplications,thequiescentpowercanbereducedbyabouthalfbyusingthepoweradjustpin,PWRA.Thisisespeciallyusefulwhenoperatingwithhighsupplyvoltagesofupto±12V,orathightemperatures.
Theoperatingtemperaturerangeis−55°Cto+125°C.TheAD8336isavailableina16-leadLFCSP(4mm×4mm).
