TheAD8801/AD8803provideseightdigitallycontrolleddcvoltageoutputs.ThispotentiometerdividerTrimDAC®allowsreplacementofthemechanicaltrimmerfunctioninnewdesigns.TheAD8801/AD8803isidealfordcvoltageadjustmentapplications.
Easilyprogrammedbyserialinterfacedmicrocontrollerports,theAD8801withitsmidscalepresetisidealforpotentiometerreplacementwhereadjustmentsstartatanominalvalue.Applicationssuchasgaincontrolofvideoamplifiers,voltagecontrolledfrequenciesandbandwidthsinvideoequipment,geometriccorrectionandautomaticadjustmentinCRTcomputergraphicdisplaysareafewofthemanyapplicationsideallysuitedfortheseparts.TheAD8803providesindependentcontrolofboththetopandbottomendofthepotentiometerdividerallowingaseparatezero-scalevoltagesettingdeterminedbytheVREFLpin.Thisishelpfulformaximizingtheresolutionofdeviceswithalimitedallowablevoltagecontrolrange.
InternallytheAD8801/AD8803containeightvoltageoutputdigital-to-analogconverters,sharingacommonreferencevoltageinput.
EachDAChasitsownDACregisterthatholdsitsoutputstate.TheseDACregistersareupdatedfromaninternalserial-to-parallelshiftregisterthatisloadedfromastandardthree-wireserialinputdigitalinterface.Elevendatabitsmakeupthedatawordclockedintotheserialinputregister.Thisdatawordisdecodedwherethefirst3bitsdeterminetheaddressoftheDACregistertobeloadedwiththelast8bitsofdata.TheAD8801/AD8803consumesonly5mAfrom5Vpowersupplies.Inaddition,inshutdownmodereferenceinputcurrentconsumptionisalsoreducedto5µAwhilesavingtheDAClatchsettingsforuseafterreturntonormaloperation.
